Skiing in Alpe D'Huez
Feb 2007 ....
| So ... the ski trip this year took me away from Tignes this year to the fantastic resort of Alpe D'Huez. | ![]() |
We took a package trip organised by Skiworld, to stay in the Chalet Hotel L'Escapade. Their organisation seemed crazy in the UK when we booked: their website is basic, their computer system was offline, the staff didn't know anything, but don't let this put you off. Once we had landed in France all their staff were organised, professional friendly and fun. They made our holiday a great success and I would recommend them to anyone. Chalet L'escapade is basic, and like many places in the ski resorts the rooms are small. There is a great bar and restaurant area, where Skiworld provided us with a fantastic breakfast each day, and a 3 course meal every night. They worked realy hard to vary the menu and every meal was simply delicious. The hotel has a hot jacuzzi outside to soothe away the aches of a hard day on the slopes, and a steam room and a sauna on the inside.
The snow wasn't great, but for most of the week all pistes were open, and we managed to do most of them. Alpe D'Huez is famous for it's extremely long Black Runs, but we only got around to checking these out on the last day, when only one was open. Skiworld organised a day trip over to Serre Chevalier for one day. Serre seemed to have better snow conditions (perhaps due to the beautiful tree lined pistes) as well as some of the most fantastic skiing I have ever done. Some of the red runs seemed to go on forever ....
Overall we had a great time, but I have to offer one final (sarcastic) round of applause to Monarch Airlines who managed to book us on to the wrong flight twice before getting it right, kept us waiting on the runway for an hour before take off in both directions, and then still managed to loose my ski boots on the way home.
